Geoff Hodge is a knowledgeable horticulturist. He is a freelance writer, author, radio broadcaster and gives talks on many gardening subjects.
At his presentation to the Ticknall Gardening Club on 14 November 2023, Geoff started by telling us about Global warming/climate change. He described how we would all have to change the way we garden. He then started to describe as part of a slide show that we have to look after our soil and improve it before planting any plants or seeds. Adding organic matter, improving drainage, and using ground cover plants to improve the drainage.
He suggested plants we could use in the future to continue to garden and in a different way. For example, snowdrops, lupins, Passion flowers, Cornus, and many more.
Geoff’s delivery was interesting and factual. However, at the end of the talk my mood was at a low ebb, and I didn’t like the ‘dig’ at Monty Don either. I firmly believe that generally gardeners are forever hopeful as we are always looking forward. We will continue to face the challenges ahead as far as climate change is concerned and within our own gardeners.
